The WheatNitroGene project responds to the urgent need for transformation of the global cereal production leading to food security for all of us, healthier diets and less agriculture’s environmental impact. Bread wheat plays a key role in this innovation being the most widely grown crop worldwide, and the dominant staple food in the temperate countries. Wheat production could benefit from the scientific knowledge about the genetic variation and genetic architecture of the sub-traits making up yield and end-use grain quality, which is the main aim of this project.
Key words: association mapping; genetic variation; grain nitrogen content; grain protein content; nitrogen; SNP genotyping; wheat; yield
